Eluding Police, Aggravated Assault with Motor Vehicle, Possession of Stolen Vehicle:  May 18, 2012 @ 20:29 Hrs
Ptl. Matthew Levine was monitoring traffic on Route 23 North in Pompton Plains, when he observed a 2005 Chevy Equinox traveling at a high rate of speed and when the officer initiated a motor vehicle stop of the vehicle; it took approx. ½ mile to pull over just south of the Newark Pompton Tpke. Upon the vehicle stopping, Ptl. Levine ran the registration which came back as a reported Stolen Vehicle, out of East Hanover on May 17, 2012. Upon requesting backup units, a short time later the vehicle sped away and made the turn around at the Newark Pompton Tpke and failed to stop for its red traffic light and turned left and proceeded south on Route 23 at a high rate of speed. Ptl. Levine and other officers pursued the vehicle and as it approached the Jackson Ave intersection, the vehicle drove recklessly through the stopped traffic, ramming a vehicle waiting at the intersection and continued south on Route 23. The vehicle was followed out of Pequannock Township, and into Wayne were it eventually exited Route 23 onto Route 80 east. In doing so, the vehicle struck a Wayne Twsp Police vehicle several times and came to a momentary stop. Ptl. Robert Brown took position behind the vehicle in an unmarked Police vehicle, as the suspect drove the Equinox in reverse ramming the Pequannock unmarked vehicle. The suspect was able to elude capture and continue on Route 80 eastbound, where it exited onto Madison Ave in Paterson, NJ. As the vehicle entered Paterson, officers from Pequannock, Wayne, Paterson, and the NJ State Police converged on the area. In Paterson, the suspect drove the Equinox down a dead end street, driving through a fence at the end of the street and eventually drove directly at police vehicles and rammed head on into Pequannock Police vehicle operated by Ptl. Timothy Jones, coming to rest on the hood of the police vehicle. During the incident, the suspect struck 7 or 8 police vehicles. The occupants of the vehicle were all taken into custody consisting of the driver- a 14 year old boy from Newark, two 15 year old boys from Newark, two 16 year old boys from Newark and Irvington, and a 14 year old girl from Irvington. All juveniles were eventually transported to Pequannock Twsp Police Headquarters with the assistance of Wayne PD and the NJSP. All juveniles were processed and lodged into the Morris County Youth Detention Center in Parsippany. The 14 year old driver was charged with Eluding Police, Aggravated Assault, and Receiving Stolen Property, and 16 motor vehicle summonses for his operation of the vehicle in Pequannock Township. The driver has charges pending in Wayne Twsp and the City of Paterson for numerous counts of Aggravated Assault and various other criminal and motor vehicle complaints. All 5 of the juvenile passengers were charged with Receiving Stolen Property.
 
Disorderly Conduct, Criminal Mischief, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of Fake ID:  May 19, 2012 @ 00:58 Hrs
Police received a report of intoxicated males walking on West Parkway near Tunis Place screaming in the road. Ptl. Leonard Anzano responded and noticed several mailboxes were damaged in the area. As Ptl. Anzano was approaching a group of individuals that were in the process of knocking down a mailbox, upon seeing the officer they immediately fled. The officer took chase and was able to arrest one individual. While putting the individual into custody, another suspect was escorted to his location by a resident in the area. A short time later, a third individual was seen walking in the area and was taken into custody. Lucas Ahlstrom, 19 years of age from Wellfleet, MA was charged with Criminal Mischief and Possession of a Fake Identification. Ross T. Goveia, 19 years of age from East Ham, MA was charged with Disorderly Conduct. Michael T. Kennedy, 20 years of age from Brewster, MA was charged with Criminal Mischief and Disorderly Conduct. The three individuals were released pending their appearance in Municipal Court.
 
Driving While Intoxicated, Suspended and Unlicensed Driver, Reckless Driving: May 20, 2012 @ 02:42 Hrs
Ptl. Matt Levine was traveling south on Route 23 when he observed a 2009 Toyota Camry in front of him operating between two lanes as it proceeded south on Route 23. The vehicle was stopped and the officer spoke with the driver, identified as: Edward G. Opiko, 24 years of age from Paterson, NJ. While speaking with Mr. Opiko, the officer observed him exhibiting signs of impairment and administered field sobriety tests on him. After testing, Mr. Opiko was placed under arrest and transported to headquarters for further testing. Mr. Opiko was charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Reckless Driving, Driving While suspended, Unlicensed Driver, and Failure to Maintain Lane. He was released to a friend pending his appearance in Municipal Court.
 
Driving While Intoxicated, Possession of CDS (Heroin), Speeding, Careless Driving, Possession of CDS in a Motor Vehicle:  May 21, 2012 @ 01:41 Hrs
Ptl. Robert Brown was on Hopper Ave when he observed a 1999 Plymouth Voyager traveling at a high rate of speed. Upon stopping the vehicle on West End Ave, the officer spoke with the driver, identified as: Joseph F. Lupo, 25 years of age from Pompton Plains, NJ. The officer observed Mr. Lupo exhibiting impairment and administered field sobriety tests, and later placed Mr. Lupo under arrest. At headquarters, Mr. Lupo was searched and located in his right sox was a clear cellophane wrapper containing twenty individual wax paper folds containing a white powder. Mr. Lupo was charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Speeding, Careless Driving, Possession of CDS (Heroin), and Possession of CDS in a MV. He was lodged into the Pequannock cell for arraignment in Municipal Court in the morning.
