DWI Arrest: On October 1, 2018 at 7:35 p.m., Ptl. Michael Rafferty responded to the report of a possible intoxicated driver on Newark Pompton Turnpike. The caller stated that the vehicle was driving on the wrong side of the road and struck several pedestrian crosswalk signs on Newark Pompton Tpke. Upon his arrival, he observed the suspect vehicle, a silver Toyota Corolla backing on the roadway with its hazard lights activated. Ptl. Rafferty conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the operator, later identified as Carolyn Schnell, 54 years old of Lincoln Park, N.J. Ptl. Rafferty reported that he observed several signs that Ms. Schnell appeared to be impaired. After a brief conversation with Ms. Schnell, she was asked to exit her car to perform field sobriety tests. At the conclusion of the tests, Ms. Schnell was placed under arrest and transported to police headquarters for processing. She was subsequently charged with driving while intoxicated, careless driving, failure to maintain a lane, and being under the influence of CDS. She was released to a third party and has a scheduled court date at the Pequannock Municipal Court.
DWI Arrest: On October 4, 2018 at 1:05 a.m., Ptl. Vincent LaManno was in the parking lot of the Quick Chek convenience store on Jackson Ave. At that time observed a silver Nissan, Versa parked in a parking stall with the driver slumped over in the driver’s seat. Ptl. LaManno attempted to make contact with the driver, later identified as Scott Smith, 23 years old of Lincoln Park, N.J., After several attempts, he was able to wake him from his sleep. After brief conversation with Mr. Smith, Ptl. LaManno observed that he displayed multiple signs of impairment. Mr. Smith was removed from his vehicle and performed field sobriety tests. At the conclusion of the tests he was placed under arrest. He was transported to police headquarters where he was processed and charged with driving while intoxicated and reckless driving, and being under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance. Mr. Smith was released to the care of Chilton Medical Center and has a scheduled court date at the Pequannock Municipal Court.
