The Township of Pequannock recently received the results from the Spring 2020 Lead & Copper Sampling. No public notice is required but a letter detailing the results is available for review.
Sixty (60) samples were collected with three (3) samples exceeding the action level (AL) for the presence of lead of 15 ppb; the other fifty-seven samples were below the AL. Other than providing those who participated in the sampling with their result and the global result, and providing the NJ DEP with the results and corresponding documentation, no further notification is required of the Township of Pequannock.
As previously presented, the USEPA has not established a maximum contaminant level for lead in drinking water. However, USEPA has established an action level of 0.015 milligrams per liter/15 parts per billion (ppb). Should more than 10% of the samples tested exceed the action level, the water provider is required to take additional action, including system wide notification. As noted above, three (3) of sixty (60) samples or 5% exceeded the action level and therefore further action is not required, as a result of this sample.
In addition to lead and copper sampling, the Township has continued with quarterly sampling for Total Trihalomethanes (TTHMs) and Haloacetic Acids (HAA5), as well as all other test required by the NJDEP. While notice was previously required for exceedances in the TTHMs and HAA5 in samples taken in the first quarter of 2019, all quarters since then have seen dramatic decreases in the presence of both disinfection byproducts. Therefore, no additional notice is required. Results for all tests are publicly available at the NJ Drinking Water Watch website, which is available at NJ Water Watch.
