The COVID-19 pandemic is likely beginning to impact the mental health of many citizens. These impacts may deepen as this crisis continues. To work to improve public health outcomes, the Health Department is sharing the following message and resources.
As we are all well aware, the people of the United States are now experiencing a historic and global pandemic that has created a quickly developing and devastating public health and economic crisis. The New York/New Jersey metropolitan area has been hit particularly hard. We are all faced with major and troubling disruptions to our normal, everyday lives which are continuing for a protracted period of time. These difficulties are made worse by the unknown consequences and fear that normally accompany disasters of great magnitude, whether on a personal level or on a mass scale.
Our nation has faced catastrophes of all kinds, from war to severe economic hardship, from natural disasters to terrorism, but throughout our great history, we have always endured and will continue to do so. Some of our greatest achievements have been forged from the depths of great hardship. Undoubtedly, there are many great achievements yet to come for our nation, starting with overcoming the COVID-19 crisis.
An important part of defending against, and strongly rebounding from, the impacts of this crisis is to diligently look after the health and welfare of one’s self, in addition to that of family, friends, neighbors, loved ones, and our communities. This is sometimes forgotten and can be of great detriment to us personally and to those around us.
There are so many ways we can be stricken by this crisis. Loss, Illness, economic hardship, inability to provide for one’s self or family, fear, isolation, loneliness, anxiety, and stress are some of what we may be experiencing. This has the potential to result in mental and psychological trauma to some degree. All of us must try to keep aware of this fact and to watch closely for its signs, subtle though they may be. The importance of this cannot be overstated.
